Gladstone Area Group Apprentices Ltd (GAGAL) is a not for profit community based organisation whose core business is managing the employment and training of apprentices and trainees. 

GAGAL has been in operation throughout Central Queensland for in excess of 25 years and has assisted over 2000 apprentices and trainees into trades and professions. A Group Training Organisation (GTO) like GAGAL offers a comprehensive service for both employers and potential employees.  Through the coordination of apprenticeships and traineeships, job seekers are able to gain recognised skills and qualifications that will create the foundation for a life-long career in their chosen trade.

What is an Apprenticeship?

  • An Apprenticeship is a job that combines paid employment with the structured training required to gain a trade qualification. A trade qualification is nationally recognised and is often required before you can legally perform certain tasks within the workplace. 

  • An apprenticeship is a contract between an employer and an employee which is competency based and can last from 3 to 5 years depending on the trade.

  • Not only does an apprenticeship provide you with the skills required to work in a specific trade area, but it also shows potential employers your skills and dedication to work.

    What does GAGAL provide for an Apprentice?

    • Host Employer

    • Training expenses

    • Wage, superannuation, sick leave and holiday pay

    • Field Officer - monitoring training

    • Personal Protective Equipment including uniforms and boots

    • Tool Allowance

    • GTTC provides a safety net for apprentices who are in between hosts and gives them continuous employment in our workshops

      Before you decide to undertake an apprenticeship, you should be aware of the following things:
      • An apprenticeship usually takes up to 3-5 years to complete.

      • You will be required to undertake practical and theoretical tests within a classroom as well as a site or workshop environment.

      • You may be required to travel to complete all training modules within your training package.

         

        What is a Traineeship? 

         

         

        • A Traineeship is a job that combines paid employment and structured training required to gain a non-trade qualification. 

        • A traineeship generally takes 1 to 2 years to complete and provides you with a recognised skill within your chosen industry.

        • Not only does a traineeship provide you with the skills required to work in specific industry areas, but also shows potential employers your dedication to succeeding in your industry. 

          What does GAGAL provide for a Trainee?

          • Host employer

          • Cover the cost of your training

          • Wage, Superannuation, sick leave and holiday pay for the duration of your traineeship

          • Dedicated Field Officer

            Before you decide to do a traineeship, you should be aware of the following things:

                There are usually minimum education requirements for apprenticeships and traineeships.  These pre-requisites are provided to help ensure the potential apprentice or trainee will succeed in completing all training.  

                The level of education requirements depends on the trade or industry.

                If you would like to undertake an apprenticeship or traineeship, but feel your current education levels may hold you back, you can enrol in a bridging course.

                What is a School Based Apprenticeship/Traineeship?

                A School based apprenticeship or traineeship provides year 10, 11, 12 students with the opportunity to commence training towards a qualification or skill while completing secondary studies. Generally students will be at school for 3 days each week, with the other 2 being spent in the workplace undertaking their apprenticeship or traineeship.  This consists of one day at college and 1 day of work placement. All school based apprenticeship or traineeship studies will be included on your Year 12 Certificate in addition to your school results.  As a school based apprentice or trainee, you will be eligible for a Queensland Certificate of Education.

                A school based apprentice or trainee must undertake a minimum of 48 days of paid work per year. At the completion of year 12, School Based apprentices will convert to either full time or part time employment arrangements and all time spent and all qualifications gained, will be credited towards the full time or part time apprenticeship.

                The GAGAL Technical Training Centre, offers apprentices and trainees a hands on learning environment, complimenting their classroom studies.

                Who can apply for a Traineeship or Apprenticeship?

                ANYONE WHO IS:

                • An Australian citizen or has permanent residency in Australia for a minimum of 6 months

                • Over the age 15 years of age or under 65.
